Stanislas cordova6/24/2023 Night Film is a little bit like Polanski’s The Ninth Gate - if that movie had been as smart as The Club Dumas on which it was based, if it had been about cult horror films and their reclusive director instead of medieval texts, if Corso’s sidekick had been a homeless aspiring actress and a lovesick drug dealer instead of a demonic chain-smoking blonde. If that list sounds faintly ridiculous, that’s because it is - but it’s also absolutely thrilling. McGrath sets out to investigate her death, and becomes embroiled in a terrifying narrative of the Cordova family history, abuse, sexual deviance, and demon worshipping. Scott McGrath, an investigative reporter “who’d go to hell just to get Lucifer on the record” but has recently fallen out of favor due to some ill-chosen remarks made on live television, is skeptical, perhaps because McGrath blames his fall from grace on Ashley’s father. Ashley Cordova, the daughter of reclusive cult film director Stanislas Cordova, has been found dead, and her death ruled a suicide. Night Film is part detective fiction, part horror story, part film buff’s fictional wet dream. “Everyone has a Cordova story, whether they like it or not,” begins Night Film, Marisha Pessl’s second novel.

Kate harris land of lost borders6/24/2023 But it was a lot of pages for me to read while chomping at my proverbial bit, wondering when the actual journey was going to start. I mean, yes, I wanted to know about her, her life pre-Silk Road, and it was pretty necessary to the story for the reader to understand her science and environment focus. I mean, yes, the first sixty or ninety pages is non-travel backstory which was… eh. Many adventures, much nature-watching, months of aching legs, wonderful jokes. Kate and childhood friend, Melissa, bike the Silk Road over the course of ten(ish) months, with lots of reference to the environment, science, space, and people generally being shitty guests to this planet and its other denizens. Your two-or-so sentence summary (as I’ve been trying to do this more): This week’s book is Lands of Lost Borders by Kate Harris.

A better place mark roeder6/24/2023 And they have no idea how valuable every child is. Their parents are going to throw them out of the home or they already are separated from their parents and the boyfriend is irresponsible and all he sees is the possibility of having to pay child support. “They have an abortion because they can’t afford the ones they already have or it’s their first one and they’re not ready. only the supernatural remains and who better to investigate than Marshall Mulgrew, the expert on the paranormal. Blue thinks it must be a fantasy game, but he slowly discovers Tydannon is a real place that exists in an entirely different world. “It’s just terrible that we don’t have a better safety net for these women,” Gietzen told The Eagle in 2022. This is the 26th novel published by Mark A. He literally had the biggest heart of anybody I know.” “If they needed a car payment or an insurance payment, money for food or diapers, rent - he’d cover it. Or if someone needed their cell phone taken care of, he’d cover it,” Newman said. “Basically, if somebody needed rent, he would cover it. Newman sat on the Kansas Coalition for Life board for a number of years, and said women who were convinced by Gietzen’s outreach not to terminate their pregnancies could rely on his financial support until their children turned 18.

Tintenherz by cornelia funke6/24/2023 I felt about them as I used to feel about the pirates in Treasure Island - a book frequently mentioned in Inkheart - "Oh, they're only characters in a book!" This would, of course, be entirely appropriate if the rest of the characters seemed any more real. The trouble is that the villains are two-dimensional characters. Told in harsh, jolting sentences - which may be partly due to the translation from the original German - the novel relates how the villainous Basta and his horrible boss, Capricorn, appear, kidnap Mo, and are tracked to their hideout in a ruined Italian village. But this time I am not sure the promise is quite fulfilled, though the story is undeniably exciting. Cornelia Funke seems to have a gift for this: her previous, award-winning novel, The Thief Lord, opened up similarly towards its end. The story opens with Meggie discovering this through the arrival of the unhappy trickster-figure, Dustfinger.Īt this stage, you feel an enormous prospect opening up, promising marvels. Nine years back, Mo read aloud from Fenoglio's Inkheart and unintentionally fetched all the baddies into reality, causing Meggie's mother to disappear into the book. Unfortunately, a living being is always transferred into the book at the same time. The basic, bookish idea is that Meggie's father Mo (often called Silvertongue) can, by reading aloud, fetch characters from a book through into the real world.

Big friendship authors6/23/2023 The book’s strongest sections occur when they engage with research and other writers, and I wish they’d included more of that and less about their personal lives. Sow and Friedman also include a fair number of excerpts from texts and emails that are decidedly obnoxious. This short text is replete with unfunny play-by-plays of inane events, many of which feel only loosely related to the subject matter. Like many people who work in media and have podcasts, Sow and Friedman think the details of their lives and their relationship are more interesting than they actually are. I’ll get my complaints out of the way before pivoting to the qualities of this book that I enjoyed. For readers like me who don’t listen to Call Your Girlfriend or share the authors’ professional or cultural interests, there’s a frustrating amount of filler content. Sow and Friedman’s take on the subject is energetic, and in its best moments manages to also be profound. Having written an essay on the nature of friendship last year, this is a topic about which I am very passionate. Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman’s Big Friendshipis a little book with a lot of heart.

This book is written mostly in the dialogue format. The element that I will analyze is #4 DIALOGUE. This book is decadent, delightful, delectable, and delicious.
